Problem with Brazilian version of OIAL
Added on 12-17-1998
Apparently, there is a problem with the Brazilian release of
"Once In A LIVEtime". According to various Brazilian
fans, disc two only contains six tracks (approximately 38 minutes)
instead of eleven :
- Peruvian Skies
- Guitar Solo
- Pull Me Under
- Metropolis
- Learning To Live
- A Change Of Seasons VII
Elektra and Warner Music Brazil have been notified about this
problem, and will hopefully be able to sort things out soon.
The latest news from Mike Portnoy
Added on 09-13-1998
Hey all,
Here's the latest....
(feel free to post & pass on...)
I just finished the final edit on the "5 Years in a LIVEtime" home video.
(Yes - I get director's credit on it, and I loved doing it...)
This will be the ultimate treasure for any DT fan.....It runs a full 2 hours.
I won't give out a track listing, because I want everybody to watch it without
knowing the contents, but I will tell you it includes:
*excerpts from the Unplugged fan club show in Rotterdam
*excerpts from the Uncovered fan club show at Ronnie Scotts
*Live & behind the scenes stuff from the '94/95 & '97/98 tours
*In the studio footage from the Awake & Infinity sessions
*Videos for Lie, The Silent Man & Hollow Years
*Stephane Auzilleau banging his head in the front row in Paris : )
The video is set for release the same day as the "Once in a LIVEtime" CD on
Oct 27.
I'm pretty sure the Japanese release will NOT have a bonus track as has been
rumoured....this is because I feel that the fans will be shelling out enough $
as it is for a double CD & video, that it is unfair to make someone go for $40
for a Japanese import for one or two more songs....
...between the CD & video, there will be 4 1/2 hours of LIVE DT for the fans
already and besides, there will be plenty of outtakes on the Xmas CD.
(Yes, you can say that...)
On the touring front, sorry it has taken SSOOOO long to get to you official
dates, but they have been constantly changing....
As of now, we are scheduled to play at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Sao
Paulo, Brazil on September 26th, 1998.
Also on the bill is Slayer, Megadeth, Manowar, Savatage & several others.
It also looks likely we will be playing 3 shows as a special guest to Megadeth
on October 1st, 3rd & 4th.
Still waiting for venue & city info.......
That's all for now....

the following countries :

The video will be released in Germany in January.
Marillion on "5 Years In A LIVEtime"
Added on 09-20-1998
The following is taken from an interview Steph Perry from
Rock Notes On-Line
did with Steve Hogarth from
Marillion :
Steph Perry:
We heard that you performed with Dream Theater at the
Ronnie Scott's show?
Steve Hogarth:
They said they were doing a little gig, and the idea of it was that they wanted to
perform songs that had influenced them in their early years. And to collaborate with
artists that continue to influence them. I know that the drummer, Mike Portnoy, is a
bit of a fan of Marillion and
he invited us to perform his favorite song, which was Easter from our Seasons End album.
So [Marillion guitarist] Steve
Rothery and I performed Easter with Dream Theater. I also did [The Beatles] Happiness
Is A Warm Gun, alternating verses with [Dream Theater lead singer] James LaBrie. Mike
emailed me actually just this morning and said he's putting together a video for Dream
Theater and wanted to include our performance from Ronnie Scott's and did I mind.
I told him, of course I didn't mind!
"Promotional copies" of OIAL
Added on 10-31-1998
Apparently, a lot of people have received what seem to be
promotional copies of "Once In A LIVEtime" from CDnow and
various other stores. The CDs themselves have "The record
company may demand return of the CD upon request" printed
on them along with "For Promotional Use Only" in reverse.
I'm waiting to hear back from Elektra about this problem,
although it's probably just a printing error.

Fan Club gig in Rotterdam
Added on 06-11-1998
Hey all,
I am writing to you from the airplane on our way to Switzerland to kick off
another exciting European tour!!! : )
Here's the latest....(and this is all "official" and ready for public
consumption)
The Fan Club show in Rotterdam on June 22nd will be
a kinda-sorta-pseudo-acoustic-electric-casual-"unplugged" type of set.
It will be 100% different from what our show at the Dutch festival the
follwing week (and any of the other shows) will be.......
We will play songs we haven't done in a while, some new songs (NOT M2, so don't even ask!), some covers, etc....
It should be a real intimate & special night.
We will be recording the show with Kevin Shirley for part of a live album to
be released in the Fall....
Also, it looks likely that we will also video tape the fan club show for
inclusion in a possible new home video. (That is, if I can talk the label into
a new home video...
they seem to think nobody would be interested!!! hahahahahaha!!!)
Now, as if this weren't enough...
We will also record with Kevin Shirley the show 3 nights later in Paris,
(a traditional DT show) also for the live album....
It looks very possible that the Paris show will be an EXTRA LOOONNG show
(maybe 2 sets with an intermission) in order to record as much material as
possible.
Between these 2 shows, we will have enough live material (and different songs
& versions) to cover a very wide spectrum of our career & catalog for a live
album & video.... (Don't say Uncle Mikey doesn't look after you guys!!!)
How many of you will witness both shows???? : )
Well, that's the latest and greatest for now....
We have some rehearsing to do!!!!!
C-ya real soon,
Mike Portnoy

E-Center show (Camden, NJ) cancelled
Updated on 08-16-1998
The E-Center show on August 12th was cancelled. Apparently, Ian Gillan (Deep Purple's
singer) threw his voice out badly, which forced a last minute cancellation. However,
it looks like this won't affect the rest of the tour. Unfortunately, the Camden show
won't be rescheduled. Refunds are being given at the point of purchase.

Rumours
Added on 07-22-1998
Thanks to Rock Radio Network (see below), hard rock and metal magazines
all over the world are now spreading the rumour about a possible break
up of Dream Theater. This is currently causing major problems for some
of the official fanclubs (the Italian one in particular, thanks to Metal
Shock's issue of July 15/31) and myself.
If you read about this rumour, please mail me the name of the magazine, the country it's
published in, the address of their website (if they have one) and their email address.
Rock Radio Network/touring confusion
Added on 06-22-1998
Those of you familiar with London's Rock Radio Network
and their mailinglist, have probably read the following 'news item' :
DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy told London's Rock Radio Network yesterday
that the band's current tour with Deep Purple and
ELP may be their last. In addition to 20 North American dates,
the band are playing a one-off "semi-acoustic" Fan Club-only
gig of old, new & cover tunes in Rotterdam on Monday and a special
2 set, 3 hour-plus gig in Paris on Thursday, both of which will be
recorded by Kevin Shirley for a new live album and possible home video
for release in the fall...
Please do not panic or email Mike Portnoy about this. As it turns out,
Rock Radio Network misunderstood Mike. The "final dates" he
mentioned to them, are simply the final dates (as in 'confirmed') for
the DT/ELP/DP tour and final dates for the current
Dream Theater tour (not final EVER!).
The Latest (message from Mike Portnoy)

Hampton Beach, NH instead........

Metropolis part II (which is currently about 25 minutes long) will be released as an EP
with additional live tracks, in the middle of 1998.
UK release
FII will be released in the UK on the 17th October through Warner.
There wasn't going to be a release but Warner have had so many

Message from Mike Portnoy on Ytsejam
Hey all,
Mike here......
Yes, I have received all of the kind emails from all of you since my
"coming out" a few weeks back...I should have time to answer
some of them sometime in the next century or so..... : )
A few things:
A) A few people have mentioned that the German LTE CD's have spaces
throughout 3MW which therefore makes it DEFECTIVE!!
This is a total bummer for me as well, and I have spoken to the guys
at Magna Carta who are freaking.....They are recalling the whole run
and re-pressing the CD.
I believe if you have the original, they will exchange your copy for
the proper version through the mail.....check with them through their
web-site....
B) I will have confirmations on our summer plans in the next week or
so, but I can say that what we have PENCILED in is:
1. headlining Europe through April
2. some select headlining shows in the US in May
3. European festivals in June
4. opening slot for Deep Purple in the US through August & September
afterwards, I think it will be time to start thinking of the next
recording........
As things get confirmed, I'll pass them along.
C) here's a crazy one for ya......I'm finishing up turning my basement
into a rehearsal / recording studio.
Marlene & I are using all of the banners that fans have made & I have
collected through the years....my problem is, I am covering the walls,
ceiling, etc and have run out of banners...
Your mission if you choose to accept it....if you are coming to any of
our European shows in April (or any shows in the future for that
matter...) make a banner and toss it up on stage for me at the end of
the show....
I'll use it in my studio & maybe even post a picture of it to you all
when it's done...
That's all the news that's fit to print for the time being....
c-y'all on the road,
Carpe Diem

"Fix for '97" setlist
The setlist for the Europian "Fix for '97" tour was exactly the same
as the one for the US "Fix for '96" tour. Here is the setlist as it
was posted on the Ytsejam mailinglist :
A.C.O.S. -- 1 (The Crimson Sunrise)
A.C.O.S. -- 2 (Innocence)
The Mirror/Lie
Burning My Soul
Another Hand/Killing Hand
Just Let Me Breathe
Caught In Alice's 9-Inch Tool Garden
Peruvian Skies
Pull Me Under
Lines In The Sand
Take Away My Pain
A.C.O.S. -- 4 (The Darkest of Winters)
The Ytse Jam
Learning To Live
A.C.O.S. -- 7 (The Crimson Sunset)
Encore: Metropolis Part 1
approx. 2hr 15min
1) ACOS 2 went directly into The Mirror/Lie
2) The Killing Hand had a new jazzier keyboard section
just before "When I go back again, would it be the
same..."
3) Peruvian Skies went right into Pull Me Under
(dat-dat-dat, dat-dat-dat)
4) ACOS 4 actually started with the end of Carpe Diem,
without vocals. (The part where Myung is doing the
crazy bass line, and of course "PLEASE DON'T GO" had
to be sung by us)
5) ACOS 4 goes right into Ytse Jam goes right into
Learning to Live goes right into ACOS 7. Take into
account that comment #4 was an instrumental, we
didn't see James for about 20 minutes...he had a
nice break.
6) Learning to Live had a new addition to the middle
section...much more rocking, but I'm not sure if I
preferred it to the original. It was fun to hear
something different.
7) Metropolis had a new instrumental added that sounded
to me like it was borrowed from "Cupid's Dead" by
Extreme and "Night Ranger" by Night Ranger.
In Tilburg (Holland) they skipped "Lines in the Sand" and
played "Trial of Tears" instead.
"Fix for '96" tour dates
DT went on the road in the US, this time for 5 shows in December, to test
out the new material for the album and to thank the fans for being so

this summer, has been pushed back. According to Mike Portnoy,
he wants to release the near 30 minute opus on the next full
studio album.
Metropolis Part II
During an interview for Guitar World (November issue), John Petrucci got asked the
question if he thought the fans would be disappointed because the new album was a

New maintainer for the Dream Theater FAQ
After nearly two years, Chris Merlo has decided to stop maintaining the Dream Theater
FAQ. Starting February 2, 1998, the FAQ will be maintained by Pat Griffin. Chris,
thanks for doing a great job and good luck with your studies. Here is the announcement
Chris Merlo posted on the Ytsejam mailinglist :
Well, I have made my decision. But before I get to that, I have a couple
of things to say.
First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you for all your support
during the past couple of years while I've been maintaining the FAQ.
There would be no need to have a FAQ if there weren't fans to read it,
and there would be no need for a maintainer if you, the fans, weren't
always on your toes letting me know when things needed updating. You
guys really are my family away from home, and I couldn't have done it
without you. I would also like to thank everyone that has written to me
and to the Jam with your letters of support and thanks. It was rewarding
enough to know that I was doing Dream Theater a service. But reading how
you all have felt over the past week has been great. I can't thank you
guys enough.
I also owe a debt of gratitude to the members of Dream Theater, specially
Mike for helping me make the FAQ accurate. It wouldn't have been nearly
as fun maintaining the FAQ for any band other than one as uniquely
talented and personable as DT. Thanks, guys.
And finally, thanks to all of you who wrote to me offering to become the
new FAQ maintainer. It is abundantly clear to me, as it should be to
everyone on the list, that Ytsejammers genuinely care about each other
and about the band.
This is a great time commitment, as I'm sure you all can guess, and those
of you that volunteered should feel good about it.
OK, enough sentimental yapping. The news you've all been waiting for is
here. The new maintainer of the Dream Theater Frequently Asked Questions
List is...
Pat Griffin <gabbo@dreamt.org>.
Congratulations, Pat. You have a shitload of work ahead of you. :)
That's the news, and I'm outta here.

Hollow Years B-sides and Xmas present
This was posted to the Ytsejam on November 5, 1997 :
Well, this is gonna be short but I wanted to post a couple things that
I found out last night in talking to Mike. First off, the B-sides for
Hollow Years are gonna be You or Me (the pre-Desmond Child version of
You Not Me) and I believe Where Are You Now.
(Turned out to be 'The Way It Used To Be')
Also, within the next 24 hours or so (as I type this) they need to wrap
things up for a little special something all of us (who are in the
fanclubs) will be getting come December - most of you can guess what
I'm talking about.
Source: Ytsejam
Like last year, there will be another Xmas present from Dream Theater to
the fanclubs members. Unlike last year, this present won't be given to just
members of the UK fanclub but to members of all five official fanclubs.

Dream Theater Snags Shirley, Sherinian Says No Yes
May 15 [9:45 EST] -- Top rock producer Kevin Shirley has been snagged
by New York's prog-rockers Dream Theater. Shirley is on a roll with his
last two projects, Aerosmith's "Nine Lives" and Silverchair's "Freak
Show.". Dream Theater's long songs and elaborate productions will be a
change from the radio hits generated by those artists.
Band manager Rob Shore reports Shirley and the band will be going into a
small New York studio to start pre-production before heading to the old
Power Station, now called Avatar, June 2. The project is optimistically
set for a release on the East-West label early in the fall.
Meanwhile, Dream Theater nearly had their keyboard player snagged by Yes.
Derek Sherinian was being wooed by that band to replace the departed Rick
Wakeman. It seems that Yes had been scheduled to tour this summer but
Wakeman wouldn't go and subsequently left the band to concentrate on his
Christian music endeavors. Sherinian, flattered, none-the-less said no
to the Yes offer.
The new CD is finished
(message from Mike Portnoy)
Subject: Final DT studio details!
Date: Sunday, August 03, 1997 1:46 AM
Hello All!!
Well after 2 months of seriously intense work, our new album is FINALLY finished!!!!
It is amazing!!! (If I may say so myself!)
Here are the final details which you can pass onto the world & beyond:
Dream Theater - "Falling Into Infinity"
Produced by Kevin Shirley
Release date - Tuesday, September 23rd 1997
CD track listing:
- New Millennium (8:20)
- You Not Me (4:58)
- Peruvian Skies (6:43)
- Hollow Years (5:53)
- Burning My Soul (5:29)
- Hell's Kitchen (4:16)
(Instrumental - made up of old middle of "Burning....")
- Lines In The Sand (12:05)
(featuring guest vocals by Doug Pinnick of King's X)
- Take Away My Pain (6:03)
- Just Let Me Breathe (5:28)
- Anna Lee (5:51)
- Trial Of Tears (13:07)
final CD running time: (78:18)
Unfortunately - due to manufacturing restrictions, it is possible (but not
confirmed) that the cassette version may be shorter (as was the case with "Awake").
The Japanese release will most likely have a bonus CD containing 1 or 2 extra
songs. (the demos will be used for extra tracks...nothing else was recorded
during the album's sessions....)
The 1st single to go to American Rock radio will likely be "Burning My Soul".
It will probably be serviced approximately 2 weeks prior to the album's
release (figure the 2nd week in September)...so start calling your local
station!
Cover artwork was done by the legendary Storm Thorgerson who has done all of
the classic Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin covers.
We are scheduled to play 3 or 4 Headlining shows in South America in the
middle of September, and then if all goes as planned...we'll begin the
world tour starting in America sometime in October...
Well....There you have it!!!!
All the news that's fit to print.....
As more details unfold, I'll pass them on as always....
Until then,
Carpe Diem........
Mike Portnoy
Message from Mike Portnoy
Hey Guys!
Everything is going great...Here's the latest to report.
We finally have:
1. ALBUM TITLE - "Falling into Infinity" and
