Dream Theater

Dream Theater for Mom
September 16, 2011 4:34:40 PM UTC Post #1

I want my wife to be a DT fan, but I know I'll have to start slow.. To this end, I wanted to gather up their most gentle and sweet songs and burn it for her. I kept it in order of album release year. Here's what I have so far...

1. Wait for Sleep
2. The Silent Man
3. Hollow Years
4. Through My Words
5. Through Her Eyes
6. The Spirit Carries On
7. Goodnight Kiss
8. Solitary Shell
9. Vacant
10. The Answer Lies Within
11. Far from Heaven
12. Beneath the Surface

What am I forgetting or overlooking?
Thanks

Maybe Another Day or This is the Life. Maybe even Surrounded or I Walk Beside You. I don't know what your definition of gentle might be, but those songs have a good upbeat vibe even though they are not ballad-type songs and they might be good for introducing someone to Dream Theater's other styles without throwing Octavarium at them.

EDIT: Oh! Maybe Ana Lee from Falling into Infinity.

I'd definitely say I Walk Beside You, however you might want to reconsider Goodnight Kiss. While it's one of my favorites, the sorta scary guitar solo with the woman in agony in the background might turn her off!also, if you have a way of doing it (you can do it in iTunes I believe) the last 5 minutes or so of Count of Tuscany (for me) are wife-converting magic! :)

You forget "Space-Dye Vest". I think a nice trick to get your wife, or someone, to like Dream Theater, becomes easier if instead of playing from cds you put a dvd on. "Octavarium" from "Score" dvd is very impressive, specially the intro, and generally showing details such as unisons, or jams, make things easier. You can put something from An evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess. It is a classic example that shows the range of Dream Theater's potential in music. Even some of Liquid Tension Experiment albums, "Liquid Dreams", "A state of Grace," as well as John Petrucci's selected tracks from Suspended Animation as "Lost without You". If your wife won't become A Dream Theater fan after all those songs, stop trying.

Well, my wife likes DT because Spirit Carries On. I think it could be the first song to introduce to her, and then Walk Beside You.

I got my wife onto DT when she heard Space-Dye Vest on Awake. Then Scenes From A Memory, which she liked in its entirety. Now, she's completely hooked, and we see DT almost every time they're in town!

The first time my wife heard TAMP, she said "oh, I love that guys voice"

Disappear could be a possible choice.
