Dream Theater

In the Presence of Enemies, pt. 2 Appreciation Thread

This just manages to be my penultimate Dream Theater song, maybe even the all-time favorite on days when "Finally Free" isn't quite doing the trick. I know that it's cheesy and it's melodramatic, but it's got such an enthralling vibe to it that makes me feel queasy and crazy and batshit all at once. I know that a lot of people end up finding it lost on them. What do you think?

It is indeed very good, one of my top songs too. Don't understand all the hate for the Reckoning.

I like it as part of the whole song, but if I'm going to listen to just one part of the song, I'd probably prefer Pt. 1. Not that I'd ever just listen to one part of it...? Overall I think the song is amazing.

Love this song as well as TMOLS. But somehow I think having two similar songs on the album dimishes the greatness of each.

It's a pretty bad song.

I see Aniland is back to old form.

Anyway, I think the song gets much too flack, I enjoy it, though Pt. 1 is much better.

Aniland, please go. I didn't want you on DTF and I don't want you here either.

In The Presence of Enemies part 2 is a great song, but I think that Part 1 is way better. Also, this website really needs moderators.

In The Presence Of Enemies as a whole is one of the best DT songs (it was the one I'd have considered their best when I was first getting into them), and Part 2 makes up the bulk of it and if Part 2 was a song in itself, it'd still be really high. Heretic / Slaughter Of The Damned are the meat and bones of the song in my opinion, even though they are bookended by the themes from Part 1 and their reprisal at the end.

People complain about the Reckoning, and while it's not my favourite part of the song or not one I'd pick as my favourite DT instrumental, I really don't see anything wrong with it, at all. I think it's good.

Doesn't "penultimate" mean second to LAST? I think the words you're looking for are "second favorite"...

It's turtles all the way down.

ITPOE Pt 2 is great but I still dig PT 1 a little more
