9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
10. Systematic Chaos
11. When Dream and Day Unite

Each one has a unique feel to it though and depends on my mood for which one I listen to the most. But Octavarium is probably my favorite!

Starting from the absolute best.

1) Octavarium
2) Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory
3) Train of Thought
4) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
5) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
6) Images & Words
7) Systematic Chaos
8) A Dramatic Turn of Events

3. A Dramatic Turn of Events
4. Awake
5. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance
6. Train of Thought
7. Systematic Chaos
8. Octavarium(Octavarium is clearly one of their best songs, but the album isn't satisfying)
9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
10. Falling Into Infinity
11. When Dream and Day Unite

(I don't think that A Change of Seansons is an album, but it's a perfect song so we shouldn't forget it)

Wolfpacker96's picture

Man, I'm not even sure of any of these, and mine will be quite different from others here. But going by my playing time lately:

1. Systematic Chaos
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Awake
4. Train of Thought
5. Octavarium
6. Images and Words
7. Scenes From a Memory
8. Six Degrees
9. Black Clouds
10. Falling Into Infinity
11. When Dream and Day Unite

The top 10 are, to me, all in the A+ to A- category, so they could move around and aren't much different. I haven't seen anyone put Systematic on top, but I just can't stop playing that. I especially like the 5.1 mix on a very good surround system. I wish they would do that for more albums, but I guess I'm the minority on that. I guess I like the heavier things better, but love a lot of songs from the Light Side of greatest hit.

And Niels B, I don't think we "hate" When Dream..., it's just not as good as the others. Sound quality and singing is important to me, and I just don't find myself playing that CD very often.

I made a post earlier without ADTOE, so here's my updated ranking after letting it sink in, the general ranking has also changed as well for me.

1. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
2. Octavarium
3. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
4. Train Of Thought
5. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
6. Images And Words
7. Awake
8. Scenes From A Memory
9. Systematic Chaos
10. Falling Into Infinity
11. When Dream And Day Unite

This is kind of hard. The only slots I'm completely certain about are the top three and the bottom two. Anyhow, here goes;

1. Scenes From a Memory
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
4. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
5. Images & Words
6. Awake
7. Octavarium (The title track is by far the best song they've ever written though, if you ask me)
8. Systematic Chaos
9. Train of Thought
10. Falling Into Infinity
11. When Dream and Day Unite

Hmmm, so I did, thanks. I'll slide BCSL in at 8. I think I have Awake ranked too low also. All I know is that I can fire up any of these albums at any given time and be happy with it.

12. Train of thought

I´m curious to know why everybody seems to hate When dream and day unite. It´s not perfect, but the only weak parts are Dominicis voice and quite a bad sound. The songs are awsome, and I can just imagine what they would sound like with the line up of today! Would be nice to hear a song or two, besides Ytse Jam, live!

Count me as one who adores Six Degrees. The title piece itself is superb musicianship and the lyrics offer a great message. The great debate and glass prison were some of MP's best drumming. My thoughts.

I don't know where all the Six Degree's love is coming from. Everyone I know hates that album.

KevShmev's picture

As of now:

1. Awake - In my all-time top 5, they will be hard-pressed to ever top it.

2. Images and Words - Not far behind Awake, this is also flawless from start to finish.

3. Scenes from a Memory - The last of the holy trilogy.

4. Six Degress of Inner Turbulence - Can't touch the top 3, but is still pretty damn great.

5. Falling into Infinity - Underrated for the longest time, this has some of their best tunes to date (Trial of Tears, Hell's Kitchen and Lines in the Sand).

6. A Dramatic Turn of Events - Could move up to number 5 depending on how well it ages. A fantastic record, and definitely one of my 5 favorites of 2011 (which is saying something considering how strong a year it's been).

7. Train of Thought - I didn't care for this much at first, but it has aged pretty well for me. Not a favorite by any means, but pretty darn good for what it is.

8. Black Clouds and Silver Linings - I don't go crazy over this like I did when it first came out, but I still like it quite a bit (despite every song, even the best ones, having noticeable flaws).

9. When Dream and Day Unite - Great songs, but the sound and Dominici's vocals hold it back a bit. If only this had been recorded with JLB singing when Kevin Moore was still in the band...

10. Systematic Chaos - Not a bad record, but aside from ITPOE I and Repentance, not much else there that interests me anymore.

11. Octavarium - The title track is awesome. That's it.

pdurbin22's picture

1) Scenes From A Memory
- This is the album that changed Dream Theater from "one of my favorite bands" to "my absolute favorite band"

2) Awake
- The album that really got me into them. A huge leap forward from any of their work up to that point, and just such a well-crafted album overall.

3) Images & Words
- An incredibly strong breakthrough effort. I simply like the previous two albums better as they sound a bit more timeless to me, whereas I&W production was still full of late 80's gloss.

4) Falling Into Infinity
- Don't get all the hate for this album. The songs are incredibly well-written, the music is full of real emotion and the production is second to none.

5) A Dramatic Turn of Events
- Best effort in over a decade. Music and vocals are really solid, and the majority of the lyrics are the best in years.

6) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
- I almost ranked this #5 as it's a great album and easily the best of their 2000's output, but there's just something about ADTOE that's a little less tiresome.

7) Octavarium
- While lyrically not as strong as past work, the album as whole really works musically, and I love that there was still some conceptual thought behind the album without it being a "concept album."

8) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
- On music alone, this album is tops. However, the lyrics and certain Portnoy vocals are just atrocious at points.

9) Train Of Thought
- Loved it when it first came out for the sheer fact that it was the heaviest thing they'd ever done, but in hindsight it's a bit too one-dimensional to be a "classic."

10) Systematic Chaos
- While certain moments are great, the album just doesn't hold up for me. My least favorite of the James era.

11) When Dream And Day Unite
- Hey, they were just getting started. Some really impressive playing for sure, but they just weren't quite there yet. And the production doesn't help either.

1) Train of Thought
My first contact with Dream Theater and as I'm generally more into heavy stuff than proggy this just does it perfectly to me. Stream of Consciousness is also my favourite instrumental (mainly because of the whole ending where it just get's epic), Honor Thy Father and In The Name of God are just perfect.

2) Falling Into Infinity
Interestingly enough I just love this album although it's nowhere as heavy as TOT. Just love the tracks on this album, and Trial of Tears is one of my all time favorite songs of all bands. (And I don't understand why except for two other people on here FII is always amongst the few lowest ranked albums, what do y'all don't like about this one?)

3) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Really love the guitar work on here, the Best of Times ending solo is just a big wow! Conclusion of the AA saga is perfect and the main riff of A Rite of Passage - epic!

4) Awake
After TOT the second DT album I got. I love the first part of the album, especially Erotomania/Voices/The Silent Man. After that something is missing to really get to me for this album though all together it's still amazing and a high favorite!

5) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
I can absolutely relate to Misunderstood somehow and of course the title track just leaves me speechless.

6) Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory
The lyrical concept is amazing and Home and Fatal Tragedy two of the greatest songs, not to forget the Overture and Strange Deja-Vue, but then again there's also some, in my opinion, rather mediocre songs on here (yeah, sorry...)

7) Images And Words
It is kind of hard to tell why, there's nothing wrong with I&W, I just somehow prefere the other albums... :)

8) Systematic Chaos
In the Presence of Enemies is amazing, both parts together. But again, too many songs that are only good but not as breath-taking as others... And The Ministry of Lost Souls is just, well, boring...

9) Octavarium
As with I&W actually there's nothing wrong with this album, I still love it a lot, first of all because of the title track. But there's also again too many songs that don't quite do it for me...

10) When Dream And Day Unite
I barly don't know this one, for some reason I never quite bothered to listen to it more often which already says a lot... I'll have to give it a go again and see where it might end up... :)

A Dramatic Turn of Events will probably end up somwhere between 4-6 I'd say, but it needs, as with many on here, more time to grow still.

It's really hard to put all the records in a rank... And well, being on 8) or 9) or so still means in the context that it's an amazing record because, well, it's DT... :)

this is really hard...

1) Train Of Thought
2) A Dramatic Turn Of Events
3) Scenes From A Memory
4) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
5) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
6) Systematic Chaos
7) Octavarium
8) Images & Words
9) Awake
10) Falling Into Infinity
11) When Dream And Day Unite

Yeah I added my personal experiences throughout my history with DT 'cause the first album I got was Train Of Thought.
Anyway I love all of them.

matei's picture

1. Awake

2. Systematic Chaos
3. Train of Thought
4. Black Clouds....
5. Images & Words
That's pretty much my top 5. I still have to listen and 'study' a lot more their latest album, so who knows, maybe my top 5 will look different some time from now.

What about live albums?

For me:

1. Score
2. Once in a Livetime
99. Chaos in Motion (absolutely terribad vocals)

Jawsfan1971's picture

1. - Metropolis Pt. 2 - Scenes From a Memory - One of my all time fav albums period!
2 - Train of Thought - Yeah I know this one gets lots of Hate but I love the heaviness of this album.
3 - Images and Words - Still great
4 - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - The first disc has a couple of great songs but the second disc really brings it home
5 - Awake - Pretty good but I am not as in Love with it as many others are
6 - Octavarium - Some good tunes but DT started to slip a little here IMO
7 - Systematic Chaos - I love Constant Motion but everything is is just OK IMO.
8 - Falling Into Infinity - I actually like this album more then I use to but overall it's average
9 - Black Clouds & Silver Linings - Worst DT lyrics ever on Nightmare and Count - Love The Shattered Fortress but that's about it.
10 - When Dream and Day Unite - this would rank higher if James were singing

*********A Dramatic Turn of Events - I have only had a chance to listen to the whole album twice so I will not rank it at this time.

Kashmir75's picture

And if I'm including A Change of Seasons (don't know why it's an EP, it's longer than some artist's albums!), it would go like this:

Scenes From A Memory
Images And Words
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Awake
A Change of Seasons
A Dramatic Turn of Events
Octavarium
Train Of Thought
Falling Into Infinity
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds and Silver Linings
When Dream And Day Unite
