So what happens with A Nightmare to Remember?

    Hi everyone, this is my first post and I've gotta say I'm loving the new album! Keep up the good work DT!

    Anyway this may be a bit of a silly question I don't know. Now that MP has left the band, when they perform A Nightmare to Remember live, who will do the growling vocals? (I personally thought they were completely unnecessary and almost ruined an otherwise amazing song, but that is a separate discussion)
    Apologies if this has been discussed before, I couldn't find it anywhere.

    I can't imagine JLB, JR and JM doing it. MM or JP would be more fitting but I can't see them doing it either. The whole thing just seems completely out of their character now. Do you think they would cut it out live or maybe not play it all together to avoid awkwardness?

    Have they played this song yet? If so, how did it turn out?

I was lucky to hear both songs live :) TDEN in Valencia (Venezuela) in 2008 and ANTR in Berlin in 2009.

I would have preferred if MP would have gotten Akerfeldt to sing the cookie monster part on A Nightmare to Remember at that show I attended, though. Musically, I like ANTR a lot, but can't stand the lyrics and those badly sung guttural vocals that don't go with the text at all.
I actually wonder whether someone sang that MP part on the auditions hehehe. We know Pete Wildoer can :D

Anyway, I think they won't perform the likes of ANTR and The Dark Eternal Night again, or maybe they will include bits and pieces into medleys.
That's a good point actually, I don't know who would have done it in the auditions.

Jordan could do it with a vocoder. He's worked with vocoding synths before to make his voice sound all roboty and low (not on any of DT's stuff; see his youtube vidoes), so it'd be cool to see him take a vocal role :). I doubt he would tho.

And I think I agree with Hprog, they'll probably just include it in medleys. Which I think is unfortunate, both of those songs are some of my absolute favourites (despite the stupidity of the vocal arrangements in some parts).

I don't think that's valid (not argumentative)??? Every song is personal to the person who writes it. It comes from within, from some source of inspiriation in their life?
Sorry, I'm confused. Which part are you saying is not valid? The comment about Space-Dye Vest? That's just what I heard their official stance was somewhere. I don't agree with it I agree with you but I think MP's growls could cause a problem if they perform Nightmare live and that's nothing to do with being too close to MP, the lyrics were written by JP.
My bad; yeah, the Space Dye Vest thing. That was their excuse for not playing it, and on the DVD commentary for 5YIALT Mike is talks about not wanting to play Anna Lee because its too much of a Derek song. I think thats crap. Once someone writes a song, and its gets released as a band song, on an album, it should be fair game to play at any time. If those were "Kevin's" or "Derek's" songs, and they didn't want them played, they wouldn't have contributed them during the writing process.

I think it's a terrible song and I hope they never play it live again.

@Awake79

I think that's a slightly different point to be honest. With Space-Dye Vest it's because it was very personal to Kevin I believe, where as this will be because non of the band could perform it in a way that comes off well. Very different reasons in my opinion. And I think Nightmare is more personal to JP as its about his car crash right? So they won't "retire" it on that basis.

Hmmmm....I don't know about that, I think we may have seen the last of the medley days. I remember on a DVD commentary Mike saying he liked the medleys, cause you could hear a bunch of different songs. But JP saying he didn't, cause it was like you were getting cheated out of hearing the entire song. So, may not be too many more medleys, if at all.

I like ANtR a lot. The whole melody throughout the song, the insane double bass drums in the beginning and the drums in general, I like it as a whole (guitar/bass/vocals/keyboards/drumss altogether).
The growling part as well..... Anyone could do it actually :-). Just kidding,

Lol, somehow I don't think James' high pitched scream would fit at all. It worked in Octavarium as they built up to it. In Nightmare it follows a deep rap - like spoken word thing (I'm guessing JP would do that?) so that's probably just gonna sound weird :P

Another interesting point to make is that they asked the drummers to perform Nightmare in the auditions so they must have some intention to play it live. Do you think that could have influenced the auditions?

@Vegvisir:

Thanks for letting me know. I will definitely look at the setlist for the first few shows. Honestly, I thought this tour was only for the new album.

Vegvisir's picture

@RC Towers:

This isn't the case. Seeing as how they've already been playing old and new songs during their current tour. You can see set lists from the first few shows if you care to.

But if your post wasn't meant to be serious then disregard. :)

lak89's picture

I actually didn't mind MP's growled vocals, but yea now that he's out of the band that leaves room for discussion, they might just omit it, I'd like to James' take on it though lol. I don't think they'll play it this tour as they've played it last tour at every show already.

RC Towers's picture

Personally, I do not think DT will play any of the other songs outside of this new album. They will, from now on, perform the entire ADTofE album (77minutes+) instead of performing other songs from previous albums. I feel they will only perform older songs with the current members of DT come to terms with MP with allowing DT to perform older songs, songs of which MP was an integral component in creating, from a lyricist and musician's perspective. If I am not mistaken, I believe in one of the videos, JP discusses the upcoming tour and states that the entire new album will be performed leaving no room to the older songs. That my take on, "A Nightmare to Remember" and the other older songs. If they decide to perform older songs, it will probably be the ones in which JM, and JP were the main lyricists. Thats my take on you topic. Good topic by the way. May Oneness Bless Us All, As One.

Awake79's picture

Hopefully they don't "retire" material like they have done in the past. It has always annoyed me that they wouldn't perform certain songs cause they were too close to the original composer. Once the album is out, its DT's music, not Kevin Moore's, or Derek Sherinian's, or Mike Portnoy's. It's DT's. Play them all!

A Change Of Screen Names's picture

I' LL DO IT!!!. free of charge. But to anwser your question I would guess JP would be the best bet. or just let JLB do it in the other direction sort of a shreeking scream. Make it a high point in the song, not a low as some think (I liked it that way sorry) in the vain of Ocaavvvavrriiuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Ilaria's picture

Nice question...I think that probably they could use a sample of MP's vocals, but I don't know if this could led to legal problems or stuff like that. Or maybe James LaBrie could arrange the part in another way....I don't know if they played it live already (not in Italy at least).

Bye :)
