Where do you think this ranks among dream theaters albums
Best album ever. Scenes is 2
I think it's one of their poorest albums, it's very comercial, to much chorus emphasis, but it's still DT. One of things that I miss is the MP's drumming, it's so part of their music that it's hard for me to hear it with another, it seems that I'm hearing a band inspired by them.
The best for me it's Systematic Chaos, it has it all, progressiveness, technic with various time changes, the heavyness, oh my god! I love all the albums so far, the last one it's still stuck =\
commercial? really? I doubt any of the songs will get any air play as is the DT tradition though the 1 song under 5 minutes could be considered more for radio play.
That being said, do you remember the early attempts at radio play from DT. Taking a 6-7 minute song and chopping it up to make a 4 minute song doesnt sound good even if you aren't familiar with their music.
In the forseeable future, I don't think we'll need to worry about DT soundling like Maroon 5

Are expletives and threats of violence always your first responses toward people whose opinions differ from yours?
overated maybe that person needs my redwing boot in the ass
can't say anything bad about the new stuff deffinetly ear candy listing to bridges in the sky now

I wanted to comment about the vocals on this album. Well done and soulful. Original and accessible. I listened to this album once and wanted to listen to it again not being sure why. That's when I know I've just heard a great album. Love it! Im still trying to comprehend the complex peices.
Coincidentally, I would have to say that "Scenes from a Memory" is one of the most underrated albums in the history of rock music. I feel that it far surpasses other concept albums of great renown, including "The Wall," "2112," "Operation: Mindcrime," etc. Yet, outside of the Dream Theater fan base, most people have never heard of it.
the choices of tone and the sound mix is the best ever, but I personally like the content of scenes from a memory better, it was just wild, brave, and intriguing. ADTOE, on the other hand, to me is much more mature. beautifully constructed songs. surely is not overrated, but in my opinion scenes from a memory is still the best.
Definitely don't think it's overrated in the slightest. For me, it's an absolute bombardment of ear-candy!
It's my third favorite after Awake and Images and Words, which are (for me) their two best in a way that neither of them is better than the other. They're both the first and the second best :p
Definitely their most overrated, but it's certainly not terrible.
I've tried hard to like this album, but I just don't. To me, this is Dream Theater's most overrated album.
I agree i am a mike portnoy fan but mike mangini sure hit the mark. he's an amazing drummer. i think the songs are very strong i think train of thought is my second favorite
Being a 20+ year Dream Theater fan, and a dedicated Mike Portnoy fan, I wasn't originally going to give DToE much of a chance, thinking on impulse that Mangini just isn't Portnoy. I was right! While I will ALWAYS love Portnoy, Mangini's playing is FLAWLESS, and seems to have renewed a certain energy in the band that has been missing from the last several albums. Don't get me wrong... I don't have a problem listening to the quality music they have put out before DToE, but this album is simply amazing from beginning to end. The guys have gone big for this album, and it should be obvious by listening. "Prog" is BACK!!! Thank you Dream Theater, for making one of, if not the BEST album ever!
Well, there are already a couple of "list their albums" threads but anyways, I'd say that A Dramatic Turn of Events is their second best album ever as I feel that it's actually even more consistent and "complete" than both Images & Words and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence which makes it number two in my book, only surpassed by Scenes From a Memory.
Then again I do feel that, unlike a lot of their other records, it doesn't really have any extreme highs (nor any extreme lows for that matter). Like I mentioned earlier, I think it's very consistent. The only song that really stands out as the black sheep so to speak is Build Me Up, Break Me Down but that's just my personal opinion.
