Can Phoenix get a straight answer why you keep skipping us?

    DT hasn't played Phoenix since 2007, except as an opener for IM, which was more their schedule than yours.

    Phoenix is the 6th largest metro area in the country. A huge metal/rock town. DT has always played a headlining set here since the I & W tour and usually to capacity crowds. In the past year we've had Rush, Priest, Crue, Symphony X, Kamelot... even this little band called Adrenaline Mob have played here.

    Yet once again, for the 3rd time, DT are skipping Phoenix.

    Why? Is their bad blood between you and the promoters? Do you just not like it here? Are they not paying enough?

    We understood the first prog nation, we accepted it in 2009 because you said you be here in the Spring - which didn't happen.

    But this is getting ridiculous. I don't expect an answer, but just be aware you have thousands of fans here in Arizona between Phoenix & Tucson that would love to see you perform a headlining set.

@Skip63:

They won't play on the 4th. I didn't expect them to play in Phoenix again, but I'm more surprised there is no Vegas date. I was perfectly willing to drive up their to see them. This means they completely skipped Las Vegas on this tour. That makes no sense to me, how the hell can a band skip Vegas?

Skip63's picture

looking at the dates the 4th is the only day off in a while so......

Skip63's picture

How about a 7/4/12 date for PHX. Danny Z where are you?

cygnus's picture

Sun 7/1 San Francisco, CA Warfield Theatre
Mon 7/2 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheater
Tues 7/3 Anaheim, CA The Grove of Anaheim
Thu 7/5 El Paso, TX Abraham Chavez Theatre
Fri 7/6 San Antonio, TX Majestic Theater

Yeah, no chance of Vegas, Phoenix, Albuquerque, or Tucson with this schedule. Way too tightly packed.

@Skip63:

You're surprised? It was a miracle Dream Theater played Phoenix last December. I didn't even bother looking at the new tour dates because I knew there was no chance of an Arizona date.

I just checked the dates and the only one even remotely close to us is Anaheim, or LA, but such a pain to get to that area. I was hoping at least for a Vegas date.

I'm on the fence about the Cali dates, really depends on the setlist. Since they don't change it up anymore, we'll have a good idea of what to expect. If they are playing a good amount of songs I really like or have never seen live, I will go. Otherwise I'll skip them this time.

Skip63's picture

Here we go again. No Arizona date for the summer tour. Oh well I didn't think they would be coming this tour again anyway.

I actually think they toned down the sound - Mesa has noise ordinances and I've seen acts get turned down during shows at MAC. James was low in the mix at a few points, but I thought that felt more like the sound guy didn't get him turned back up when he came back from a break. Mangini's solo was a little less crazy than the LA one, but he also seemed much more comfortable w/ the older material tonight. At one point in the LA show it seemed like he got lost - tonight he was locked in and having fun - injecting his own personality into the older tunes, esp. Fatal Tragedy. Really liked seeing that.

Filthy Beast's picture

Agreed, great show, but personally I thought the sound was mixed a little too hot for a venue this size. JLB sounded great and Mangini's drum solo was pretty awesome but JMY was too low in the mix. The crowd was into it and the guy's seemed to enjoy themselves.

I had a few rows of short people/women in front of me, so no ogres blocking my view. This was the setlist I wanted to see, plus I picked up the animation t-shirt, so all in all I enoyed it.

Good show, better than the Nokia Theatre show I saw in Sept. The sound was simply amazing at MAC, and Andy McKee was a treat as well. But what's with the drunk lady who threw her bra in the air?

cygnus's picture

Getting excited yet boys?

I'm wearing my The Cure t-shirt, I love the reaction I get from people at hard rock shows when I walk by with Robert Smith's mug on my chest, lmao!

I'll be in Row AA and other Pitters?

Wingnut1991's picture

DT is on there way to Mesa! Just got home from the Anaheim show, you guys are in for a treat. Enjoy the show, it wad worth the wait.

Filthy Beast's picture

Anyone here interested in a Row H ticket to see this show? Two people have backed out on me now and I'd rather see it go to someone who will really enjoy the show. The price will be cheap, certainly below the $43 face value. PM me.

From JP's tweet

Dream Theater is excited to announce a unique treat for our fans! During the December leg of our current world tour, spectacular acoustic finger style guitarist Andy McKee will be our special guest for the San Diego and Anaheim shows in California, the Mesa Arizona show, and three shows in Mexico: Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. We're sure everyone at these shows will appreciate his instrumental mastery

I am so stoked for this show. I don't think its an "evening with", they have some acoustic soloist playing according to Danny Zelisko's website. I do agree that DT has been away from here for a very long time. and I disagree with them needing to play Tuscany...much rather hear some older material off of Train of Thought or Scenes from a Memory (or just play all of Images and Words :P)

cygnus's picture

According to the New Times ad, this show is listed as 'An Evening With' performance. Venue also verified no opening act.

Now, I highly doubt this means the traditional 2 set + encore. But perhaps we'll get an extra song or two. Here's hoping for 'The Count of Tuscany', which has never been played live in Phoenix!

Syrinx's picture

@PHX_Rocks: I got it too. The show listing from Danny Zelisko's site always said 8pm, I think they just messed up on the original tickets is all.

PHX_Rocks's picture

Ok sounds good. I guess I owe you another beer....My little brother is at NYC show right now.

cygnus's picture

@PHX_Rocks:

Yep, got that as well. Strange that they have to reissue tickets. I asked her if there was an opening act or if it's just Dream Theater. I will let you all know the response.

PHX_Rocks's picture

Anyone else get this?

Hello,

The time of the Dream Theater show scheduled December 4th has changed from 7:30pm to 8pm. We will resend tickets to you with the new time. The date and venue remains the same, December 4th in the Ikeda Theater at the Mesa Arts Center.

Thank you,

Jessica Fennig | Assistant Box Office Supervisor | Mesa Arts Center

@Filthy Beast:

Here's what happened; They sold the back and middle rows first. Then once those were sold out, or at least mostly they opened up the PIT and first few rows because they know people will buy them.

Danny Z - we appreciate you bringing DT to Phoenix. But that was a dirty trick. I understand business is business, and probably it was the venue that pulled this nonsense. But for the DT fans who were on at 10am it was disheartening to see FRONT ROW tickets available later in the day. However, beggars can't be choosers, and we are grateful DT is playing here. :)

This show won't be moved anywhere, there are still plenty of great tickets left, so the demand is really not that strong right now.

This show needs to be advertised in Tucson, Flagstaff, Prescott, & Yuma. New Mexico as well. If that happens it could sell out.

The problem is that DT haven't played here in 4.5 years as a headliner, so they have lost the momentum in this town. They have to rebuild that starting with this show.

Had Mike gotten that 5 year break, DT would be playing a bar in Tempe in 2016 lol.

My advice? Grab a pit ticket, which there are plenty of right now. Sell your other ones for face value in a few weeks as the show starts to sell out.

Filthy Beast's picture

Hey all, FNG here. I got my tix for the DT show at MAC, Row H, center. I too was online right at 10am and other than a few seats near the ends on G, these were the closest available at the time. Checking back tonight, now I see pit tickets and several seats towards the sides in rows A & B so I don't know what's up with that.

Anyway, this will be my first time seeing DT, so I'm pretty stoked and the seats I have are great anyway. I've seen a show at MAC before. This venue is great, awesome acoustics, intimate setting with good sightlines from just about every seat. DT will blow the roof off this place!

Edited to add: The MAC Ikeda Theater is pretty small, only 1600 seats. What are the odds this show will get moved to a larger venue, like the Dodge? I'm hoping that doesn't happen...

cygnus's picture

PIT tickets available right now !

sqwarlock's picture

Got my tickets this morning. Row R seat 301. Yeah it's far back, but I've been to this venue before and it's hard to find a bad seat.

Is it safe to assume that this is an "Evening With:" event since there are no other bands listed on the calendar?

cygnus's picture

@danny z:

Thank you Danny for bringing DT to Phoenix!!! You might want to ask the webmaster here to put up a 'Buy Tickets' link on the tour page, lol.

Again, good to see you back in the saddle here in Phoenix.

Thanks Danny!

@PHX_Rocks:

Row H here, not bad. You can get a view of the venue here; http://www.mesaartscenter.com/index.php/misc/about/gallery

Click on the Ikeda Theater photo. Doesn't look like there is a bad seat in the house.

I was on right at 10am. There were no rows higher than G available. I'm on a fast T1 line, pretty close to the venue. There is no way in hell rows AA - F were sold out that quickly. Very interesting.

Either way beggars can't be choosers, and I'm pleased with row H.

PHX_Rocks's picture

Hope everyone got their tix. Row G dead center for me. :)

I may be coming down if they don't announce a Colorado stop. I saw the Salt Lake City show and I need more!!

azmusicgeek's picture

MAC website has ticket prices - REALLY reasonable - $27-$45. I can afford it even if I can't convince my editor that DT is worth some ink.
And MAC is one of the nicest venues in town - intimate, great sound, comfy seats, free-to-cheap parking. Although I haven't heard a really loud show there. I still expect it will sound better than the Web Theater did!
