Hallo!! Here I am another female DT fan :)) I do love that amazing guys !!!! ❤️ greetings from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - where I was born and currently live.

Hi Ingrid, welcome aboard. When i started this thread i had noticed after many years of seeing Prog Rock/ Metal concerts that there was very few Girls/Women in the audience, and i have wondered why ever since, and as i have said before i don't mean it to be a sexist comment or enquiry, in fact i would love it if DT acquired a female member in the band ( any ideas out there ). Anyway i hope all you girls out there continue to listen to and enjoy as much DT and Prog music as possible.

Truly fascinating topic for an actual witness from several live events and family members. From my perspective female fans are more engaged lyrically first, musically second - substance over style so to speak. I can refer my daughters as example. Personally, I was introduced to DT at G32003 when JP was guest musician with Portnoy providing percussion. Dream Theaters effort at that time was Train Of Thought. It took several car rides to and from school but soon both girls began asking to hear the music every time in the car. I mean every time! First my oldest commented when listening to the words, they were telling stories far more than mere rhyming. You know - real topics. This in turn sparked me to reflect more lyrically than just the driving melodies with pulse pounding rhythms and variant tempo changes. My youngest still "now 19" still wants to hear ToT when in the car, I shit you not. I propose all women young or old once exposed to DT music cannot dismiss the content and morale value of the messages put forth - it's part of their genetics and instincts. ~jms

I think you make some good points JMS64, I think "popular music" like boy/girl bands and C/Rap have been aimed at a young/very young girl audience and this has had a very negative effect on the Female part of the prog rock market. I do hope this does not sound condesending or sexist, i would love there to be more and more females enjoying DT.

been a hardcore DT fan about 5 years and i just discovered the registration in the website. just went to their Los Angeles show and was able to get front row seats. i think the lyrics of The Bigger Picture kindda struck a chord with me and it was very cleverly thought especially with the first section. but i particularly love the lyrics from Answers Lies Within, its simple but with strong emotions behind it. my fav albums are Six Degrees, Scenes, Falling into Infinity and Systematic Chaos.

I'm new to this board and spotted this topic and had to reply. I'm a married mom of 2 kids, 16 and 23. The first time I heard DT was when MTV and the radio first started playing Pull Me Under on heavy rotation. I've been an avid fan ever since.

While I personally have never met a female fan of Dream Theater, I'm sure they're out there. I believe the scarcity of them comes from how prog music in general seems to appeal more towards males than females, thought I'm sure it doesn't intentionally mean to. I've tried to tune my girlfriend onto DT (to no avail I might add), and as she so eloquently puts it: "ain't nobody got time fo dat". That's probably where the problem stems anyways; the impatience to sit through such lengthy compositions. But, for any female fans out there, keep on rockin and keep on listening. :D

i find your gf's response very similar to that of my male friends, as i have tuned DT music to several of my male friends. some even generalized it as 'no difference with the everyday pop rock station i've listened to except that it is longer'. i think this also has to do with personal taste and the level of knowledge in music.

Honestly, I'm a girl & I'm with Dream Theater 12 years... DT's music doesn't leave my head, heart & of'course player during this years (I know a lot of music but DT's the best)) I'm from Russia\ Khabarovsk :)

I've been a fan since high school - Dream Theater's one of my favourite bands. I'm a big fan of progressive music. Would be great if DT can tour South Africa sometime :) nudge nudge wink wink

@Neat: Indeed!!! Good to see you aren't a "believer" and that you're with the DT's army.

Neat's picture

@Jorge: Maybe most of them do. But "most" doesn't always mean "all", right?

Well, I'm just an ordinary girl who doesn't know much about the theory behind the music I love to listen everyday, in short, I'm not a musician.
But I have been listening to DT since I was in primary school, it's about 11-12 years ago and found that I really like this kind of music since I listened to Pull Me Under for the first time.
Then I realized that I love DT when I couldn't pass a single day without listening to their songs.
I'm pretty sure that there are many girls/women over there, just like me, who love DT as boys/men do, yet they don't show it.

Back to the topic, for me, to be a fan of a musician, especially DT, is not about a male-or-female matter. It's more about the individual taste of music.

Women, by nature, are not technical beings, Men are!

BlueRoseOrchestra's picture

i smell misogyny is your statement. i hope you're not implying that DT music is only technical. it is a flawed thinking and shallow generalization to say women by nature, are not so and so, w/o speculating the oppression and inequality which have underminded them throughout the 20th century.

Jorge Armando's picture

That's because women are busy listening to Justin Bieber, One direction or some other crap.

I have been a fan of DT for about seven years, and now at the age of 62! i realise that i have been looking for a band like them for many years now, going back to the early days of the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Genesis and Yes.
The reason i started this post is that it seems to me most female music fans don't like music that involves a lot of instrumental parts and changes of tempo, but i am pleased to see that there are some girls both young and old with a passion for DT.

P S if DT ever split that will be the end of my music life.

I am indeed female, at an age of 15, and have been a DT fan for..almost 2 years now. It's not a huge amount of time..but I am a HUGE fan..a MASSIVE fan. I don't know what I'd do without Dream Theater and their music in my life. Seeing them earlier this year with my Dad was just the best day of my life so far. They are, and always will be, my favorite band. ♥
Im a woman and i like them although people are surprised that im also kind of a geek lol i am not a musician although i wish i were! I love DT's music and lyrics they speak to me personally. I think it would be really cool if they did a futurama episide!! That would be awsome!! :D
I know how you feel, Lou, a guy I worked with was shocked when I told him my favorite band was DT. He was surprised I even knew who they were, much less be a female who liked them!! And get this, my boyfriend would never know who they were if it weren't for me(not that he listens to them anyway!!).

Here I am, from Italy. I really love them, in particular the voice of James that I've dreamed lots of times. And, as a pianist, I usually spend my free time studying Jordan's solos; I hope one day I'll be virtuoso like him..
