DREAM THEATER ANNOUNCE FIRST LEG OF THEIR EUROPEAN TOUR IN SUPPORT OF THEIR NEW SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 24, 2013 LAUNCHING JANUARY 15 AND WRAPPING FEBRUARY 24, 2014 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR PLANNED FOR MARCH 2014 DREAM THEATER--John Petrucci on guitar, John Myung on bass, James LaBrie on vocals, Jordan Rudess on keyboards and continuum, and Mike Mangini on drums--are one of the biggest touring bands in the world having completed a 14-month tour with 110 shows through 34 different countries from 2011-2012 in support of their eleventh studio album A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Now the Grammy-nominated progressive metal titans have announced the first leg of their European tour launching January 15 in Porto, Portugal in support of their new studio album being released September 24; it marks the first self-titled release in the band's nearly three-decade career. The upcoming tour will encompass 30 cities in 16 countries. The band is also planning to tour North America beginning in March 2014. DREAM THEATER was recorded at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, with John Petrucci producing and studio luminary Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) engineering and mixing. The album marks a brilliant new chapter for the always adventurous band, their first to have been written and recorded with drummer Mike Mangini (who joined the band in 2010) wholly integrated into the creative process from the start. “I see every new album as an opportunity to start over,” says Petrucci. “To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about DREAM THEATER and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” DREAM THEATER is proud to provide VIP packages for all shows on their upcoming tour (full tour itinerary below). I am listening to Dream Theater since over 20 years now and have never been to a live concert before. In Mannheim was my first concert now, partly I was astonished that it had been placed in a smaller area where not so many people could attend. But my fear of standing within big masses of people said: cant be better and even greater to be able to stand right in the front!!! Before I was speculating: "ok, what will you do when you see them the first time? Flooding everyting with a Tsunami of tears?". A lot of times I had great problems in holding back the tears. This music - your music - accompanies me since years and through many various stages of my life, also very difficult times. First of all the music is nothing but great and it blew... me... away - emotionally you played me against the wall in a nice way ofc. Second I am proud that it is possible that on this planet there come some people together - a platform is given to them - where they can elaborate their passion and do sth. fantastic out of fun and the striving for perfection. This channels a lot of energy and I hope that after so many years you still enjoy it as much as all the fans enjoy it! Mike Mangini is also a very suiting match, as I think, and it makes a lot of fun to see him having fun :-). Thank you for all of that!!!! Hi-D

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to have experienced the awful sound at the gig. Yes, John F...I'm one of the "whining europeans".. As you seem to be one of the only concertgoers who felt that the sound was "superb", you must be related to the sound engineer, as he obviously thought the same......... (or are you the sound engineer?......)

DavidC's picture

Just got back from the concert in Kansas City, MO. --->>>> THE SOUND WAS ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL! <<<<---- Please understand that I love this band, they are fantastic live, I have seen DT many times before (once at the same venue) but this was by far the worse in terms of sound quality. We were able to purchase great seats, but all 6 of us left the venue very frustrated.

DavidC,
I have to agree.
I am a HUGE Dream Theater fan, and have seen them EVERY time they have come through KC since Images and Words.
The sound was horrendous on April 9, 2014.
LaBrie was WAY too loud. The speakers seemed to be cranked to the MAX, and distortion was prevalent. The distortion was so bad that it was very difficult to hear anything coming from Myung, or Rudess, except for a subwoofer rumble. I had a hard time hearing details of Mangini's performance, unless he was the only one playing.
Don't get me wrong, I could hear well enough to completely appreciate the normal Dream Theater musical brilliance, but it was far from the better/best shows sound-wise I have heard from them.

Just booked my ticket to go see DT play the city hall in Sheffield this coming july!!

I'm suffering withdrawal after seeing DT in Boston, Philly, NYC, and LI. Very happy to say the sound quality issues raised by the whining Europeans was non-existent. In fact the sound quality was superb. Mike Mangini, the man of 1000 faces, is a Fucking god along with the rest of his band mates. The show was phenomenal, both visually and Sonic and the set list was a real treat. I hope all future DT tours are similar - no opening act and focus on the catalog. Can't wait for the DVD!

Critical_Energy's picture

hello there, IS THERE ANY CHANCE THE BAND SHALL COME TO iSRAEL AGAIN?

g.tarry's picture

I saw DT at the Apollo in Manchester on 13 Feb and the sound was great in the 6th row of the stalls! A tremendous evening, and james did comment early on how much he enjoyed playing the venue, partly because of the acoustics. I saw Journey at the Arena in Manchester 3 years ago, and the sound there was awful.

John F's picture

I really hope that this sound issue is exaggerated. Seeing them in Boston, Philly, and NYC and I would cry if the sound sucks because sound is #1 to me.

I have just attended the dT concert in Copenhagen. I left after the break. The Sound was awful and Much too loud. I love the band and Their Music and looked forward to hear them together with my sons. They are 17. But not even with Ear plugs you could stand the Wall of sound. Labrie drowned in this mess done by the sound engineer. I hope the band Will know this as i can see from other venues in Europe that similar sound issues occur. I saw Deep Purple same place a week before with perfect sound.

I agree with Musiclovers. This was my first Dreamtheater gig, and I was not disappointed, however the sound was dreadful...... I was able to see the sound engineer, and he hardly moved a muscle all night, apart from during the first couple of numbers. He must have been hearing the same quality of sound as everybody else, but chose to do nothing about it. A real shame as it could have been so much better.. However....the quality of musicianship was outstanding and a joy to behold!!!!

Saw a good show At Wembley last night, a great set and a good three hours worth, unfortunately it was not a great show as the sound was distorted. all was good in the quieter passages but when the bass / drums kicked in it all went a bit wrong. I was sat at the side on the right hand side, petrucci side and poor old Jordon was playing his heart out (I guess) as you could only hear his solos. If it was the same sound guy as in Vienna I think you need to think again. I have seen DT on a number of occasions and this was the first time the sound was not clear. Still a really good night, just not a great one :-(
seeing bONZO'S COMMENT BELOW SOUND LIKE IT WAS NOT AN ISOLATED THING

peterr96's picture

I've seen DT countless times. Unfortunately the last two times at bloody Wembley Arena. The sound was truly abysmal. Seated row 5 block A4 with a speaker stack in your face gave monophonic, loud distorted sound albeit with a decent enough view. Labrie's soaring vocals were lost in the mush and any subtlety by anyone else stood no chance.
An "evening with" is an epic format but alas, gone are the days of Hammersmith Apollo with two nights, two different set lists and great sound.
I shall probably forgo any opportunity to see DT (or any band) ever again at Wembley Arena. It is THE shitest venue.
James, Jordan, Mike, John and John I implore you to move your London gigs to better venues that justify a. the ticket price, b. your talent, c. our loyalty.
Compare that with Steve Wilson or Steve Hackett at Royal Albert Hall, Rush at O2 or lets face it anywhere else. There is no comparison

Guys i'm looking for the opening video of the tour.. Does somebody know where i can find it or if it will be released by DT themselves? I loved it so much!!!

Great concert in manchester last night . thanks guys.

Bonzo's picture

Hi Dreamtheater!
I was at the concert in vienna. It was a really great performance and I enjoyed it very much.
But I have to tell that The tonal sound was not good. All deep sounds became blurred and that has really bad effects to your great music. the bass could not be heard differentiated and so some parts of the great double bass drumming of Mike Mangini. In some songs the piano was blurred too. Only the guitar was in nearly all songs clear.
I hope you will come again to vienna but I would be glad if you get an better sound engineer.

will it be available? when?

Broudney's picture

Is somebody knows here why the band doesn't come to Hungary this time? We're going to go onto the concert in Austria, I'm just equiring only, 'cause I'm a bit dissapointed about this. We saw them here of all new albums tour..:(
I'm sorry for the grammatical mistakes. :)

filipegaliza's picture

Hi,

I bought the platinum meet and greet ticket for the concert in Stockholm (and it seems that the show is still up, although I do not see it on the list above)
but since this is my first time going to a Dream Theater concert (still can't believe that I'm going ^^) I have a question: how do I know what time it'll start and when should I be there for the meet and greet stuff? They send any information about it or i have just to show up really early in the day of the concert?

JeffG94110's picture

Can't wait for U.S. dates either!!!
Very excited about "Evening With," as so far I've only seen Progressive Nation and Dramatic Tour of Events shows, which were fantastic, but would always have rather had the whole evening with DT than the (often excellent) opening acts!

Cat in Boots's picture

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already BUT when will we find out about U.S. tour dates? I need to start saving up!

deprivedsad's picture

Guys come to Ukraine again please! We are waiting u here!

amazingadam's picture

The Stockholm gig, where is it? Kind of worried actually :-/

Steffe's picture

Yeah, and I´m also wondering what the hell happened to the Stockholm concert ???? I can appreciate that Annexet isn´t the place to be, so where will U guys be to rock. I´ve been to your Swedish concerts for 15 years, don´t you try to escape now ! :)
