Sides of Dream Theater

DT has a lot of different sides. They can go from their light "Pink Floydish" songs like The Spirit Carries On to their heavy metal songs like The Dark Eternal Night. I was wondering what side of Dream Theater attracts to you? I personally love the Progressive side of them with songs like Metropolis Part 1, Octavarium, The Great Debate, and Breaking all Illusions.

I love Dream Theater because they embody my two favorite froms of rock music:

1. Epic, Orchestral Progressive Rock (Yes, Pink Floyd, Marillion, early ELO); and,
2. Hard Rock/Progressive Metal (Led Zeppelin, Tool, Metallica).

So I basicaly love it all, although I am gratified that the departure of Mike Portnoy (otherwise a sad day for me) also meant the end of his doubling all of James LaBrie's vocals with his Devil Voice Growl! A little of that goes a long way.

I love the grand, multi-part orchestral stylings of songs like "Octavarium," but also love the harder edge that some epics like "Bridges in the Sky" and "In the Presence of Enemies" have.

I agree!!! Funny because the sis and I were having a conversation recently something about this. The same night that DT was playing Atlantic City, Air Supply was also playing in AC, in another casino. Now I'm not only a rock music fan, I also like the sappy love song stuff, too. I mean I've seen Metallica, Megadeth, Van Halen, etc. in concert but I've also seen Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Liza Minnelli, and Barry Manilow(who I absolutely adore!!) in concert. So I was kidding around and saying "This is tough, DT, AS, DT, AS......aagh, who do I see????" Of course, I would pick DT over AS in a heartbeat. So the sis says "Yeah, I can see DT opening for AS, the audience won't know what hit them!!" and I told her "well, they do have quite a few slower songs, it could work!!!"

@Ytsejam58: Yeah, that would be cool. They have plenty of material to make their own video/s of something like The Wall and that would be great. My little novel I deleted dealt more with property rights and civility from my perception as a fan. I've got strong feelings about DT's music being performed.

Speaking of the sides of DT and a much lighter one... I just posted a funny scenario to someones post titled "Illuminati". I'd like to see DT make it into a concept album. :p

Cheers!

I would love to read that novel. I think they should novelise Scenes from a Memory and or 6Degrees too

@Ytsejam58: Great question. I'm not sure either. DT should be able to play DT's music, in my opinion. Though I don't think they'd do it right away, even if they wanted to. Hmm....

That was cathartic, I just erased a bunch.... This forum has been therapeutic for me as a fan. Dude I just wrote a small novel about DT and MP. I might haft to post it sometime, but it could get ugly and I wish them both the best.

@comment: I love everything from Systematic Chaos except "Repentence." Speaking of the 12 part suite, since Mike left does that mean they can't play any of those songs anymore?

From Black Clouds: It took me a while to get used to but im starting to like those songs. I liked The Count of Tuscany first.

From ADTOE: I like Lost not forgotten, Bridges in the sky, Outcry and, Breaking all illusions

What's the best part of a Reese's Cup? Chocolate or peanut butter? DT is such a good blend... hmmm I'm more prog I'd say. From the last 3 albums I favor Outcry, Count of Tuscany, Presence of Enemies Pt. 1.

It depends on my mood. I am a drummer for 30 years so I gravitate to the progressive stuff. The melodic / emotional songs are amazing as they give my that outlet I need. I would say that my favorite tune on the new album is"Build Me Up. Break me Down". it hits hard and rocks even harder.
