Exclusive Podcast with Mike Portnoy on MTV2 Headbanger's Blog
Added on 04-25-2008http://headbangersblog.mtv.com/2008/04/25/exclusive-podcast-dream-theater-drummer-mike-portnoy/
"In one week, Dream Theater will launch the maiden voyage of their Progressive Nation festival in Los Angeles. The tour, organized by drummer Mike Portnoy, features the prog-metal veterans along with opening bands Opeth, 3 and Between the Buried and Me.
Progressive Nation marks the first large-scale national tour to focus exclusively on an eclectic range of progressive bands, from straight ahead rock to psychedelic doom and death metal. In a year when Gigantour has removed the focus a bit from the technical proficiency of its acts, Portnoy's traveling progfest could become the go-to destination for fans of complex metal and superlative musicianship.
We recently talked to Portnoy about the birth of Progressive Nation, his background in prog metal, the genre's history, Dream Theater's recently released compilation Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) and how the band almost broke up after their only top 10 radio hit "Pull Me Under." Portnoy was also candid about being a control freak and how alcohol and drug abuse almost ruined his life."
Note about MP's 2 in-store appearances at Daddy's Junky Music in May
Added on 04-23-2008"Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2 in-store appearances at Daddy's Junky Music in May (Sunday May 18th in Albany and Tues May 20th in Boston) are charity events.
We are "kindly asking for donations at the door" to get in to the meet & greet...
Albany's charity will be for Camp Good Days and the Boston event will go to the Station Family Fund (aiding the victims and survivors of the deadly Station Nightclub Fire in W. Warwick, RI).
More info is available at www.daddys.com
No donation is too small (or TOO BIG for that matter) : )"
Roadrunner Records & Mike Portnoy Supports Record Store Day!
Added on 04-18-2008Nearly 500 independent music stores, including all of the CIMS, Music Monitor Network and AIMS coalition stores plus Newbury Comics and many others across the country (even the world) are participating in tomorrow's (April 19th) Record Store Day Promotion.Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Growing up a rock and metal fan on Long Island in the 70's and 80's was very different than it is today. There were no chain stores like Virgin and Tower and of course no internet mail order services like Amazon. The only way to pick up albums were to shop at your local "mom and pop" record stores....
In the late 70s, it was always easy to find the latest releases from my favorite bands....Led Zeppelin, The Who, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Queen, etc were all readily available at any record store. But in the early 80's, as I discovered more "underground" metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Accept, Mercyful Fate, Loudness and Raven (from reading my imported copies of Kerrang), there was no place in small town Long Beach, Long Island to find the latest records from these bands I was reading about. Then I discovered Slipped Disc Records in Valley Stream, Long Island. They not only carried the albums from these bands, but also the 12" singles with bonus tracks, the t-shirts, the imported live videos and anything else that existed! When the American thrash scene was beginning to erupt around 1983, I could always count on Slipped Disc to carry anything I was looking for from bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Flotsam & Jetsam, Death Angel and Nuclear Assault.
Taking the train there every Saturday was the highlight of my week! And on the day I received my drivers license, the very first place I drove to was Slipped Disc to pick up Metallica's Ride The Lightning album which was released that VERY day! (The imported version of course!) Now in 2008, the world is a very different place... the aforementioned chains and online stores have made it very difficult for the mom and pop stores to compete. In fact, my beloved Slipped Disc just announced it will be closing its doors for good. So let's hear it for people like Mike from Slipped Disc and all of the independent store owners that have helped shape the metal scene for the past 25 years. Without them, a lot of us may not have existed....(Or at least have been as metal as we are!)
There is also a great Youtube testimonial from Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) as well up on the Record Store Day page at http://www.youtube.com/user/recordstoreday.
When Portnoy & Akerfeldt Unite!

These 2 self-proclaimed music fanatics talked about everything from their appreciation of each other's bands to Abba to the upcoming Progressive Nation tour....

Liquid Tension Experiment to reunite and headline NEARfest 2008!
Added on 10-05-2007Liquid Tension Experiment to headine Saturday night in 2008
"We are very pleased to announce the Saturday night headliner for NEARfest X - Liquid Tension Experiment! The supergroup consisting of Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin are reconvening and preparing to tear the roof off of Zoellner Arts Center next June. Portnoy and Petrucci are founding members of progressive metal's 5-headed monster, Dream Theater, and have won accolades from fans and critics alike for their prowess on the drum kit and guitar, respectively. Rudess is was previously known for his blazing keyboard work with the Dixie Dregs and the Rudess/Morgenstein Project and joined Dream Theater officially after the second Liquid Tension Experiment album sessions. Tony Levin needs no introduction - Stick and bass maestro, two-time NEARfest alum, and played with everyone from King Crimson to Peter Gabriel to Yes to Sarah McLachlan. Liquid Tension Experiment's two studio albums, Liquid Tension Experiment (1998) and Liquid Tension Experiment 2 (1999), are filled to the brim with everything from blazing, chops-laden sonic attacks ("Paradigm Shift") to melodic anthems ("When the Water Breaks") to humorous jams ("Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure"). The improvisational nature in the writing sessions permitted the band to stretch out to many different influences, including rock, metal, prog, funk, blues and even ragtime. It is a great honor to host this ensemble of legendary, virtuoso players on the NEARfest stage for our 10th anniversary."

"In October 1998, Liquid Tension Experiment reunited at Millbrook Studios in upstate New York to record their 2nd album. A few days into the sessions, John Petrucci's pregnant wife went into premature labor leaving Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin stranded in an already set-up and booked recording studio. So like any creative and productive musicians would do, they decided to stay and JAM... and JAM they did!
For some bizarre and still unexplained reason, the master tapes of these jams were misplaced during the mixing process. But, luckily, Portnoy records almost everything he ever does and as a result his live 2-track stereo DAT mixes are the only remaining traces of this historic jam. So what you have here is as live and raw as it gets. No overdubs, no editing, no mixing.
Just 3 guys, their instruments and their spontaneous imaginations feeding off of each other."

Artists' Choice: Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater
Added on 05-21-2007To celebrate the release of "Systematic Chaos", Amazon.com asked Mike Portnoy for his ten favourite albums.
"Progressive metal legends Dream Theater make their much-anticipated return this year with their new album Systematic Chaos. Systematic Chaos takes rock and metal to epic extremes: The Pantera-esque "The Dark Eternal Night" portrays the battle between a heroic protagonist and a demonic antagonist, while the "The Ministry of Lost Souls" and "In the Presence of Enemies" are reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and Rush's "La Villa Strangiato," respectively. To celebrate the release, we asked drummer Mike Portnoy for his ten favourite albums..."

"Mike Portnoy makes no mistake about being a huge fan of music from his past. Here is a complete collection of all the covers these guys have recorded over the years plus 7 new songs. From the coolness of their version of the Monkees "Pleasant Valley Sunday" to the gripping "Maybe I'm Amazed" to the rocking fun of "I'm the Man", let's just say we think you'll dig it.
Here's what Mike Portnoy has to say about it:
"It comes down to this: I am a music fan. No matter how old I get or how much success I've had, I will always be that 11 year old kid in the KISS Army jamming along to Who tunes in my bedroom. Because of this, I still LOVE playing covers.
I have been able to tap into my Metal and Prog influences choosing covers with DT, but another HUGE side of my inspiration are my Classic Rock influences from the 60's and 70's. For the most part, the guys in DT don't share this same background so I've never been able to cover these classic bands with them.
However Neal and Randy TOTALLY do share this background, so when choosing covers with them rather than taking the obvious PROG road, we've enjoyed paying tribute to the more retro, pop-oriented side of our shared taste.
Gathered here on this CD is a collection of all of the covers we did together throughout the sessions for Neal's Testimony, One and ? sessions.
Expand your prog ears and enjoy!" - MP"

IMPORTANT NOTE regarding Mike Portnoy's in-store appearance in Bogota
Updated on 02-26-2006"Hi all,
I am writing this from a hotel room in Miami on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, our connection for our flight to Bogota today was missed due to a major delay out of San Juan Puerto Rico. (there was an iguana on the runway that caused a 2-hour delay....I sh*t you not!!)
As a result, we did not arrive in Bogota this evening as expected and I will not be able to make my in-store appearance tomorrow afternoon as planned.
We have done everything in our power to still make sure we will make it to Bogota to play tomorrow evening's show (ourselves and the crew will have barely slept to be able to pull it off), but unfortunately this means missing my autograph appearance.
Once we have spoken to the dealer, we will determine if it is to be completely cancelled or rescheduled for Monday. When I know, you'll know....
I apologize to all our disappointed fans...
But hey, at least the igauna is OK!
OK time to get some sleep...
