Update from Sean Malone
Added on 08-12-2002

The following is an excerpt from a news update from Sean Malone's website. For more information regarding Sean and his wonderful Gordian Knot project please visit www.seanmalone.net.

"My tracks for O.S.I. are finished. It's always hard to explain the style of any kind of music, especially one that is multifaceted. Each of the tracks had a MIDI bass part that served as a guideline. In most cases, I tried to keep things simple and supportive, not being sure of everything that would be put on top. So on this disc I didn't venture out that much, but in each case tried to put my own take on things from the bottom-up. I included some Stick here and there, sometimes doubling the bass, other times playing some melodies. Some of the music is very spare and texture-heavy; in these cases I did a lot of double-tracking the bass parts to create a natural kind of chorusing that I prefer to any digital effects. In fact, I rarely ever use effects on bass, so I do this once in a while to create a textural shimmer panned hard left and right. I had Mick Karn on my mind for a few tracks, bending some harmonics and playing, as he called it, 'pulse bass'. In the end though I'll have to wait and see what Jim and the crew decide for how they want to hear the parts in the final mix. Other tunes are reminiscent to Tool, and others that remind the listener of the bands from whence the composers come; some exciting grooves in 11, phase shifts, and chops throughout. All in all I enjoyed playing on the disc, though ultimately it would have been nice to work out parts with Mike as they were being recorded rather than after the fact. But on the other hand, technologically we're afforded the opportunity to lay down multiple versions and approaches to each song, then pick and choose what works best. I'd have to say though that not having been involved with the composing, it was most appropriate to take a session-approach to the disc, trying as much as possible to create parts that fit what Jim et al had created, versus trying to impose anything upon it."

Matheos / Moore / Portnoy project named OSI
Added on 07-18-2002

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JIM MATHEOS/KEVIN MOORE/MIKE PORTNOY PROJECT NAMED OSI; DEBUT ALBUM 'OFFICE OF STRATEGIC INFLUENCE' TO BE RELEASED THIS FALL ON INSIDEOUT MUSIC AMERICA

The highly anticipated project featuring guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), keyboardist Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, formerly of Dream Theater) and drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic) now has an official name: OSI.

OSI will release its debut album, 'Office of Strategic Influence,' in fall 2002 on InsideOut Music America. IOMA Managing Director Jim Pitulski expects this album to be one the label's biggest sellers to date.

Matheos, Moore and Portnoy are the core of the band, and Moore does most of the lead vocals, but 'Office of Strategic Influence' will also feature special guest vocalists to be announced, and guest bass guitarist Sean Malone (Gordian Knot).

Recording of 'Office of Strategic Influence' is taking place at Carriage House Studios in Connecticut with Grammy Award-winning engineer Phil Magnotti.

Listeners can expect to be surprised. According to Portnoy, musically speaking the album is "not Fates Warning, not Dream Theater and not Chroma Key."

A limited edition, multimedia version of 'Office of Strategic Influence' will also be available and include concept videos from Moore as well as documentary footage.

For future updates, visit IOMA's web site: www.insideoutmusic.com.

Gildenlöw comments on departure from project
Added on 06-04-2002

The following comment from Daniel Gildenlöw was posted on Pain Of Salvation's official site on June 4th, 2002:

"In April I was contacted by Jim Matheos of Fates Warning. He asked me if I would want to be part of a project together with him and Mike Portnoy, and after hearing the material I said yes. The full line up of this project turned out to be Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, ex Dream Theater), Sean Malone (Gordian Knot, Cynic etc) and myself. In good company. My role would be as a vocalist and co-composer, and I created vocal melodies and lyrics for a 26 minute song and another song, and wrote one track entirely. As it happened, Matheos decided two days before my flight over to New York that he would have Kevin do all the vocals instead, since we had so different styles. I just wanted to explain this to clarify that I did not quit the project, and there were no hard feelings or disagreements between us; Matheos liked what I did, but simply, and unfortunately for me, wanted to take the project in a slightly different direction than he first intended. Anyway, it was an honor in the first place to be chosen for a project like this. Looking at it from a perspective it is comforting to see that they obviously must have picked me because of what I do and not because of my name or nativity. The only other reason would be because of my looks, and I think it goes without saying that that is out of the question. :) Another time."
